Catholic and Lutheran theologians met in Worms, Germany, to discuss the challenges posed by the radical wing of the Reformation, known as the Anabaptists.

1857
Mormon fanatic John D. Lee, angered over President Buchanan's order to remove Brigham Young from governorship of the Utah Territory, led a band of Mormons in a massacre of a California-bound wagon train of 135 (mostly Methodists) in Mountain Meadows, Utah.

1903
German philosopher Theodor Adorno was born in Frankfurt am Main.

1922
The British mandate of Palestine began.

1975
E.E. Evans-Pritchard died.

1979
Argued: Florey v. Sioux Falls School District
Roger Florey, an atheist, filed suit against a local school district's holiday programs, claiming that singing of religious carols during Christmas concerts, like "Silent Night" and "O Come All Ye Faithful", were a violation of the separation of church and state.

2001
In the United States, four airliners were hijacked by Muslim terrorists and intentionally crashed.

2003
Israel's security cabinet votes to expel Yasir Arafat from the West Bank, describing him as an "absolute obstacle to the process of reconciliation between Israel and the Palestinians."

2005
Paryushana-parva: 8-day Jain festival to commemorate the Jain ideals of fasting and and worship.
