Theodosius the Great, Roman emperor who established Christianity as the official religion and persecuted the pagans, defeats Western emperor Eugenius and reunites the Eastern and Western empires.

Pope John XIII died.

1565
Reinforcement from Sicily finally arrive at Malta, demoralizing the Turkish troops and inciting them to abandon the siege of the remaining Christian forts.

1566
Battle of Szigetvar: Despite having killed Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent the night before in a surprise raid, the Hungarians lose to Turkish forces.

1628
Puritan colonists landed at Salem and started the Massachusetts Bay Colony

1907
Pope Pius X issued the encyclical Pascendi dominici gregis, condemning the "modernist" movement developing within Christianity.

1941
Jews in German-occupied areas were ordered to wear the Star of David with the word "Jew" inscribed. The order only applied to Jews over the age of 6.

1966
Maragret Sanger died.

1970
Palestinian terrorists hijacked four jets headed to New York from three European cities. Three were diverted to the Middle East while the fourth landed in London after guards killed one of the hijackers. On September 12th, the three planes in the Middle East were blown up.

1986
Arab terrorists attacked a synagogue in Istanbul during Sabbath services, killing more than 20 Jews.

1992
A 35-year old man died ten weeks after receiving a transplanted baboon liver.

2003
After just four months in office, Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas resigns - probably due to a power struggle within the government between Abbas and Yasir Arafat.
