Death of Sulieman (Süleyman) "the Magnificent," sultan of the Ottoman Empire. During Sulieman's reign the Ottoman Empire reached the height of its power and influence.

Around sixty thousand Polish and German soldiers, mostly volunteers, gather together on the Kahlenberg mountain (northwest of Vienna) under the command of Polish leader John Sobieski (now King John III of Poland). Their intent is to help lift the siege against Vienna.
1831
Charles Darwin had his first interview with Fitzroy, Captain of the HMS Beagle, in hopes of becoming the ship's naturalist. Fitzroy very nearly rejected Darwin - because of the shape of his nose.

1972
Muslim terrorists attacked Israeli athletes attending the Munich Olympic games. Eleven members of the Olympic team, five terrorists and one police officer were killed.
1993
The second-ever Parliament of the World's Religions ended. It had met in Chicago, the same place where the first Parliament met in 1893, and was billed as a means to help religions grow closer to one another. The Orthodox Christian representatives walked out in protest of the fact that groups without a belief in any gods were included. Zen Buddhists complained that so much of the Parliament was oriented towards "worshippers of the Almighty and Creator God," even though Buddhism "is not a religion of God."

Mother Teresa died in Calcutta, India, at the age of 87.

Reacting to the problems with priests abusing young boys and girls, Pope John Paul II stated that "It would be lamentable if, out of a misunderstood tolerance, they ordained young men who are immature or have obvious signs of affective deviations that, as is sadly known, could cause serious anomalies in the consciences of the faithful, with evident damage for the whole Church."

Portugal uses warships to prevent Women on Waves from brining their ship into Portuguese territorial waters. Women on Waves' ship travels around the world providing abortion services to women who live in nations where abortion is illegal - like Portugal.
