The Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculanium were destroyed when Mt. Vesuvius erupted.

0410
Under the leadership of Alaric, the Visigoths captured Rome and began four days of looting. This would be one of the events which forced the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West. Pope Innocent I survived because he was out of Rome, trying to arrange a peace with the Roman Emperor Honorius. Alaric I of the Visigoths died later that year and was succeeded by his brother Ataulf.

1215
Pope Innocent III declared the Magna Carta invalid. Innocent declared the Catholic Church to be a genuine state and, hence, heresy became a crime against the state which could be punished accordingly - both for the spiritual good of the individual as well as the preservation of the Church.

1349
Jews in Mainz were blamed for an outbreak of the bubonic plague. As a result, 6,000 Jews are killed.

1391
Jews were massacred in Palma de Mallorca.

1572
St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. Thousands of men, women and children died in Paris on the orders of Charles IX who was urged on by his mother, Catherine de Medici.

1662
The Act of Uniformity comes into operation in Britain. This act furthers the "uniformity of public prayers and administration of the sacraments." Around 2,000 Anglican ministers resign rather than conform to the statute and around this time Puritans adopt the name "non-conformists" for their position.

1911
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, French philosopher and paleontologist, was ordained a priest.

1929
Yasser Arafat was born.

1943
Simone Weil died.

1954
The Communist Party was effectively outlawed in the U.S. when the Communist Control Act went into effect.
