Pope Gregory IX died. Gregory canonized a number of people who were important in the history of the Catholic Church, including Elizabeth, Dominic and Anthony of Padua, and also Francis of Assisi, who had been a personal friend.

1280
Pope Nicholas III died. Nicholas engaged in a major renovation of St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Palace, which he made his official residence.

1567
The "Council of Blood" was established by the Duke of Alba. Thousands of Dutch Protestants were convicted of treason and many were had to flee the Netherlands completely.

1760
Pope Leo XII was born.

1874
German philosopher Max Scheler was born in Munich, Germany.

1955
Fighting broke out between Egyptian and Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip, but an unofficial cease fire would be agreed to on September 2nd.

1968
Pope Paul VI arrived in Bogota, Colombia, beginning the first visit of a pope to Latin America.

2003
Because Roy Moore disobeyed a federal court order to remove his Ten Commandments monument, the state Judicial Inquiry Commission charged Moore with violating six canons of ethics and he was suspended with pay pending trial before the Alabama Court of the Judiciary.

2004
In Paris, a Jewish community center is burned down by arsonists who leave behind graffiti that includes swastikas and the words "Jews get out."
