St. Helena died. Mother of Constantine the Great, Helena was an early convert to Christianity and devoted much of her life to religious patronage.

1458
Pius II is elected pope. Pius is an enthusiastic supporter of Crusades against the Turks.

1559
Pope Paul IV died. Paul was so unpopular that, after he died, a mob stormed the Inquisition and tore down his statue.

1947
Pakistan and Yemen are admitted to the United Nations.

1961
Learned Hand, sometimes called the greatest judge to never sit on the Supreme Court, died in New York City.

1990
American psychologist B.F. Skinner died.

2002
The Board of Directors of the American Association for the Advancement of Science passed a resolution (to be issued the next month) stating that Intelligent Design Theory had no place in the science classes of public schools.
