Battle of Ourique: Afonso I Henriques defeats a large Almoravid force and is crowned king of Portugal. Alfonso creates the nation of Portugal by liberating it from Muslim invaders and attempts at dominance from Castile in Spain.

1267
Pope Clement IV formed the Inquisition in Rome.

1471
Pope Paul II died. Paul was not popular among the humanists because of his repression of scholars and suppression of the Roman academy.

1875
Carl Gustav Jung was born.

1925
American politician and fundamentalist religious leader William Jennings Bryan died.

1952
King Faruk renounced the Egyptian throne - but under force due to the success of a bloodless coup launched by General Mohammed Naguib Bey. Farouk's son, Fouad II, was proclaimed king.

1953
Federal authorities arrest virtually the entire adult population of Short Creek, Arizona, on charges of polygamy. The Mormon families formed one of the largest polygamist communities in the United States.

1956
Gamal Abdal Nasser of Egypt forcibly nationalized the Suez Canal, leading to a violent response from France, Israel, and Great Britain. Nasser's actions were most immediately motivated by the decision of the United States, Britain, and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development to withdraw promised funding for the Aswan High Dam. The Soviet Union threatened to intervene, but American President Eisenhower pressured the three nations to withdraw their forces. This resulted in the image of Nasser standing up to Western nations and coming out victorious, a powerful symbol which continues to resonate among Arab Muslims in the Middle East today.

1960
Because of Iran's de facto (but not full) recognition of the state of Israel in 1950, Egypt expelled the Iranian ambassador.

1977
Israeli Prime Minister Menahem Begin announced the legalization of three existing Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank territory controlled by Israel.
