Friedrich I Barbarossa is crowned Holy Roman Emperor.

1464
Pope Pius II launches a short crusade against the Turks in Italy, but he falls ill and dies before much can happen. This would mark the death of the "crusading mentality" which had been so important in Europe over the previous three centuries.

1782
In Glarus, Switzerland, the last person in Europe executed for witchcraft was beheaded. This occurred almost 300 years after the publication of the Malleus Maleficarum by Heinrich Kramer and Johann Sprenger.

1858
Charles Darwin received a monograph from Alfred Russel Wallace which essentially summarized Darwin's own theories on evolution, thus inspiring him to publish his work sooner than he planned.

1953
Egypt is declared a republic and Mohammed Nauib is named its president as well as premier.

1993
Decided: Jones v. Clear Creek
The Fifth Circuit Court ruled that it was not unconstitutional for a school to allow graduating seniors to vote on whether or not there would prayers during graduation ceremonies.

1994
In a pub in Northern Ireland six Catholics are murdered while watching a soccer match on television. The Protestant Ulster Volunteer Force claimed responsibility for the attack.

1997
The Southern Baptist Convention, during its annual meeting in Dallas, Texas, votes in favor of a boycott against the Walt Disney Company for what the Convention calls "anti-Christian and anti-family" productions in its various media outlets.

2003
Bishop Thomas O'Brien, accused of killing a man in a hit and run, resigns as bishop of the Phoenix area diocese.

2006
Orthodox Christian Churches celebrate All Saints Day.
