Death of John VI Cantacuzene, Byzantine emperor who allowed Turkish military forces to first cross into Europe because he needed their aid against a rival for the Byzantine throne.

1525
Martin Luther married Katherine von Bora, a former nun. Over the course of their 21-year marriage they had six children and Katherine outlived Martin by six years.

1837
Mormon missionaries set off to proselytize in England.

1876
A more uniform face for Reformed Christianity was created in Great Britain when the Presbyterian Church in England merged with the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland.

1925
John L. Godsey, a former judge assisting in the defense of John Scopes, submitted a motion to the court asking that the indictment against Scopes be quashed on the grounds that the Butler Act was unconstitutional. Godsey later dropped out of the case, fearing for what his involvement might do to his reputation and legal business.

1936
In Georgia, the criminal sentence of Angelo Herndon for possessing communist literature was upheld by the state's Supreme Court.

1956
The last British troops left the Suez, ending Britain's 74-year occupation of the Canal Zone.

1965
Martin Buber died in Jerusalem. Buber was a Jewish philosopher and theologian who became most noted for his work on the nature of relationships.

1972
Egyptian and Israel planes engaged in an air battle that ended a cease-fire that had existed in August, 1972.

1997
Timothy McVeigh is sentenced to death for the bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City.
