Armies of the First Crusade captured the city of Antioch (located in modern Syria).

1098
The Crusaders under the command of Bohemond I capture Antioch, despite their numbers having been depleted by numerous defections during the previous months. The reason is treachery: Bohemond conspires with Firouz, an Armenian convert to Islam and captain of the guard, to allow the Crusaders access to the Tower of the Two Sisters. Bohemond is named Prince of Antioch.

Thomas Becket is installed as Archbishop of Canterbury.

1219
The French town of Marmande falls to the Crusaders.

1940
Decided: Minersville School District v. Gobitis
In an 8-1 decision, the Supreme Court would rule that a school district's interest in creating national unity was sufficient to allow them to require students to salute the flag.

1947
Britain announced a proposal to divide India into two separate states, one Muslim and one Hindu.

1963
Pope John XXIII dies at the age of 81 in Rome.

1968
Madalyn Murray O'Hair broadcast the first of many atheist radio programs over many years. She used the program to discuss atheism and promote the separation of church and state.

1972
At the age of 25, Sally J. Priesand is ordained as the first female rabbi in Reform Judaism.

1973
Once one of President Nixon's closest aides, Charles W. Colson pleads guilty to obstructing justice during the trial of Daniel Ellsberg, indicted for illegal possession of the Pentagon Papers in June, 1971.

1989
Decided: County of Allegheny v. ACLU Greater Pittsburgh Chapter
The Supreme Court ruled that while a creche display on public property was unconstitutional, a menorah display on another piece of public property was not.

2003
According to Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, Arab leaders attending a summit in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh agreed to end all support of terrorist organizations in the Middle East.
