Gaiseric and the Vandals sacked Rome. The Vandals entered Rome, pillaged it for 14 days and then left, taking treasures and hostages (including Empress Eudoxia and her daughters). The Vandals then headed east to Greece and Dalmatia.

The Second Council of Constantinople closed. Under the leadership of Eutychius, Patriarch of Constantinople, the council condemned various Nestorian writings.

Benedict I is elected pope.

Augustine, a missionary sent to England by the pope and first archbishop of Canterbury, baptized Saxon king Ethelbert. After this event, Christianity was able to spread much more quickly and easily among the Angles and Saxons.

Pope Eugene I dies.

King Henry VIII of England was born. Henry's desire to produce a male heir and his failure to do so with his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, would lead to a conflict between Henry and the pope - and, after that, the English Reformation.

Pope Leo XI is born.

Bernhard Förster committed suicide. Förster was a professional antisemite and the husband of Friedrich Nietzsche's sister.

Pius X is born.

B. F. Skinner began writing "The Sun is But a Morning Star," but before publication the title was changed to "Walden Two."

1982
Israeli Ambassador Shlomo Argov was the victim of an assassination attempt by Palestinian hitmen in London. This resulted in Israeli retaliation in Lebanon. In "Operation Peace for Galilee" PLO bases throughout southern Lebanon were attacked and Israeli forces eventually encircled Beirut itself.

Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini dies.

Jews celebrate Shavuot.
