Sicily is invaded by Muslims who, this time, are looking to take control of the island rather than simply taking away booty. They are initially aided by Euphemius, a Byzantine naval commander who is rebelling against the Emperor. Conquest of the island would require 75 years of hard fighting.

Crusaders led by Peter the Hermit sack Semin and Belgrade, forcing Byzantine troops to flee to Nish.

Godfrey De Bouillon attempts to negotiate a deal with the Venetians: they could take a third of any city they help capture plus trading rights throughout the Kingdom of Jerusalem if they support him against his political rivals.

After the death of Balak, nephew of Ilghazi, Turkish Emir of Mardin, King Baldwin II is released by Timurtash, son of Balak.

German Crusaders travel through Hungary on their way to the Holy Land. On the way they would raid and pillage widely, causing a great deal of resentment.

Under orders from Nur ad-Din, Saladin removes the last Fatimid Caliph from power. The Caliph of Egypt would eventually die and the Caliph of Baghdad would be recognized in Egypt.

Crusaders under the command of Richard I Lionheart march on Jerusalem, but they are turned back. The Crusader efforts were seriously hampered by Saladin's scorched-earth tactics which denied the Crusaders food and water during their campaign.

Raymond VI of Toulouse agrees to the demands of Pope Innocent III that he act against the Cathars after finding that more than 10,000 Crusaders had gathered at Lyon to lay waste to Cathar areas in southern France.

Crusaders attempt to besiege the city of Toulouse, but they are short of supplies and must withdraw.

The Crusade against Cathars in southern France is renewed.

A group of Mormons formed an organization that would obey Joseph Smith "in all things" and in "whatever he requires. Originally called the Daughters of Zion, they later adopted the name Sons of Dan. As a formal group, it only lasted a few weeks.

During a Congress of Old Catholics in Bonn, many delegates voice their opposition to clerical celibacy but nothing is done.

Friedrich Nietzsche began his book Beyond Good and Evil.
1920
A tribal revolt was launched throughout Iraqi territory after Arnold Wilson, the High Commissioner to Iraq, refused to allow for the possibility any amount of Iraqi self-government. Before long Wilson was replaced by Percy Cox who adopted a more conciliatory position towards tribal leaders and the prospects of self-government.
1941
Despite the British occupation of Iraq, British ambassador Kinahan Cornwallis refused to allow British troops to enter Baghdad and put a stop to the looting, rioting, or pogrom that had been launched against the Jewish population. In the end, as many as 600 Jews were killed and over 2000 were injured.

The government of India banned visits to a small rock situated 200 yards off-shore from Kanya Kumari in order to quell a dispute between Catholics and Hindus over who owned the rock: a Catholic church or a Hindu temple on shore.

Reverend William Johnson becomes the first openly gay person ordained in any Christian organization: the United Church of Christ.

Televangelist Oral Roberts claimed that he had raised numerous people from the dead.

Jerry Falwell announced that the Moral Majority would disband and shut down its offices.

A directive from the Vatican declared that no theologians had any right to dissent publicly from any official church teachings.
1994
The Union of American Hebrew Congregations, administrative body for Reform Judaism in America, considered and rejected (by a large margin) the application for membership submitted by the Congregation Beth Adam in Cincinnati. This synagogue had removed all references to God in its services, explaining that its own members wished to explore their Jewish heritage and identity without being forced to rely upon theistic assumptions.

The Southern Baptist Convention, meeting in Atlanta, formally apologized to African-Americans for "condoning and/or perpetuating individual and systemic racism in our lifetime" and repented for the "racism of which we have been guilty, whether consciously or unconsciously."

An international organization of rabbis announced that it was contrary to Jewish law to hand over land from Jewish control to the control of anyone else - for example, Palestinians. One of their number stated that any Israeli leader giving up control of land merited the death penalty.

The Southern Baptist Convention announced a boycott of all Disney parks and products because of the company's decision to give insurance benefits to the partners of gay employees and for hosting "Gay Days" at Disney theme parks.
1999
Because of the U.S. Army tolerating Wiccan religious ceremonies at Ft. Hood, Texas, as well as other military bases, several conservative religious groups announce a "Christian recruiting strike" against the army.

A group of more than 125 evangelical Christian leaders issue a statement affirming that the "only way to salvation" is Jesus Christ and that the Bible offers no hope that "sincere worshippers of other religions will be saved without personal faith in Jesus Christ."

Jeffrey John, an openly gay man living a celibate life, is appointed bishop of Reading, England. but he eventually turns down the post because of the controversy created within the Anglican Communion.
