Pope Gregory V crowned Otto III as Emperor.

1097
Crusaders begin the siege of Nicaea, a mostly Christian city guarded by several thousand Turkish troops. Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus has a strong interest in the capture of this heavily fortified city because it lies just 50 miles from Constantinople itself. Nicaea is at this time under the control of Kilij Arslan (Dawud Kilij Arslan ibn Süleyman ibn Kut al-Mish), sultan of the Seljuk Turkish state of Rhüm (a reference to Rome). Unfortunately for him Arslan and the bulk of his military forces are at war with a neighboring Emir when the crusaders arrive; although he quickly makes peace in order to lift the siege, he would be unable to arrive in time.

1536
The General Assembly of Geneva, Switzerland officially embraced Protestantism by accepting the position of the Swiss reformers like John Calvin and Ulrich Zwingli.

1559
Convicted on charges of heresy, the first Lutherans were burned at the stake in Spain.

1859
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born.

1947
An all-white jury of 12 men acquitted 28 whites who had been charged with lynching a black man in Greenville, SC.

1963
The highest governing body of the United Presbyterian Church stated for the record its opposition to mandatory prayers in public schools, Sunday closing laws, and special tax privileges accorded to both churches and the clergy.

1969
The legal case of Coit v. Green was launched. Black families who had children attending public schools in Mississippi filed suit to have the IRS revoke the tax exempt status of private schools in Mississippi that excluded black students from enrolling.

1978
Egyptian voters approved of President Anwar Sadat's proposal to place curbs on organized opposition to his government.

1990
Decided: Davis v. United States
Taking tax deductions for charitable contributions to nonprofit organizations are common - but just how far can such deductions extend? Can they be claimed for absolutely any funds that allegedly benefit a charitable organization in some fashion?
