Eusebius was elected pope.

1521
At the Diet of Worms, Martin Luther refused to repudiate his writings, supposedly stating: "Here I stand; I can do no otherwise."

1590
Birth of Ahmed I, future sultan of the Ottoman Empire.

1606
Pope Julius II laid the foundation stone of the second building of St. Peter's Basilica. It was completed 20 years later by Pope Urban VIII and today St. Peter's is the largest church in Christendom.

Clarence Darrow was born.

1877
Charles S. Peirce was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the first time a psychologist was honored in this manner.

1909
Joan of Arc was beatified by Pope Pius X in a ceremony held in St. Peter's Cathedral.

Argued: Mueller v. Allen
The Supreme Court would rule 5-4 that a Minnesota law allowing parents to make tax deductions for expenses incurred through things like textbooks and other supplies at private schools is constitutional, even thought most of the benefit goes to religious and not secular schools.

A truck bomb driven into the U.S. embassy in Beirut killed 17 Americans and 46 Lebanese.

2004
Sheikh Omar Bakri Muhammad announces that the "life of an unbeliever has no value, it has no sanctity" and promises that Islamic militant groups are planning terrorist attacks on London.
