Pope Benedict III died.

Richard I Lionheart is again crowned king of England in order to reassert his authority, but then he promptly leaves again to pursue his claims in France and never returns.

1521
Martin Luther appeared before the Diet of Worms. The next day Luther refused to repudiate his works unless convinced of error by Scripture or reason. According to tradition he told the assembly: "Here I stand; I can do no other."

Martin Luther was excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church.

1871
Johann Joseph Ignaz von Dollinger, a founder of the Old Catholic movement, is excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church.

1984
Shots are fired from the Libyan embassy in London into a crowd of Libyans demonstrating against Muammar el-Qaddafi's government, killing one police officer and injuring 10 others. On April 22, Great Britain broke off diplomatic relations with Libya over the incident.

Cornelius van Til is dies.

2004
Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi, leader of Hamas, is killed by in Israeli missile attack.
