Pope Donus died.

1204
After months of not being paid and infuriated at the execution of their ally, Alexius III, soldiers of the Fourth Crusade once again attack Constantinople. Pope Innocent III had again ordered them not to attack fellow Christians, but the papal letter was suppressed by clergy on the scene.

1453
Ottoman guns cause the collapse of a tower at the gate of St. Romanus during the siege of Constantinople. This breach in the walls would become a central focus of the fighting.

1506
The foundation stone of the new St. Peter's Basilica was laid under the leadership of Julius II. The church would not be completed until 1626.

1562
Huguenot leaders signed a manifesto in Orleans, France, declaring that they were forced to take up arms against their persecution at the hands of the French Church and monarchy.

1670
Major Weir, who confessed to witchcraft but is believed to have been senile, was burned to death.

1799
The African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church consecrated Richard Allen as its first bishop.

1876
Friedrich Nietzsche proposed marriage to Mathilde Trampedach. She refused because she was in love with her piano teacher.

1906
Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung began writing to each other when Freud sent a letter to Jung thanking him for sending a book of Jung's word association studies which supported Freud's theory of neurosis.

1957
Saudi Arabia announced that Israel would not be permitted to use the Gulf of Aqaba for shipping.

1961
Israel began the trial of Adolf Eichmann, captured in Argentina and charged with directing Nazi Germany's attempted extermination of European Jews.

1970
Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller of New York signed a bill repealing the state's 1830 law banning abortion after "quickening" except to save a woman's life. This effectively allows abortion on demand up to the 24th week of pregnancy in New York Stats. Similar laws would be passed in Alaska, Hawaii, and Washington.

2003
Tom Hurndall, a British photographer and peace activist observing the activities of a peace group in Gaza, was shot in the head by a soldier in the Israeli army in the town of Rafah at the border between Gaza and Egypt . He did not die immediately but was left in a vegetative state at the Royal Hospital for Neurodisability in Putney, England and died January 13, 2004.
