Medieval Jewish scholar Moses Maimonides was born.

1191
Celestine III was elected pope.

King Philip of France leaves Sicily and sets sail for the Holy Land to begin his military campaign against Saladin.

1202
Joachim Van Fiore Italian (founder of Joachimism), dies.

1282
Rebels in Sicily successful overthrew French rule under Charles of Anjou. The rebel leaders wrote to Pope Martin IV for support, but Martin promised to assist Charles in reclaiming control of the island.

1432
Birth of Mehmed II, the Ottoman sultan who would succeed in capturing Constantinople.

1492
Inquisitor-General Tomas Torquemada recommended that all Jews be expelled from Spain.

1533
Thomas Cranmer became archbishop of Canterbury.

Sigmund Freud had his first, last, and only conversation with the person known as "Little Hans." Hans's experienced strongly phobic reactions to horses, leading Freud to develop his theories of infantile sexuality and dreams as wish fulfillment. Hans' real identity was Herbert Graf and he went on to become an opera producer and director.

Rioting between Hindus and Muslims in Bombay leave 40 dead and more than 100 wounded.

Israeli and Syrian troops clash over Israeli reclamation work near the Lake Hula area.

Northern Ireland's provincial government and parliament were suspended and Britain imposed direct rule from London for one year.

1977
Argued: Trans World Airlines v. Hardison
The Supreme Court decided 7-2 that TWA went far enough in attempting to accommodate Hardison's religious beliefs and that the company was justified in firing him when he refused to comply with his work assignments.

1984
Argued: Board of Education of Kiryas Joel Village School v. Grumet
The Supreme Court found that a school district boundary was unconstitutionally drawn to deliberately aid a particular religious group.

2001
David Waters is sentenced for the murders of Madalyn Murray O'Hair, her son Jon Garth, and her granddaughter Robin O'Hair.

2006
Ugadi: Hindu New Years Day. Many believe that Brahma started the creation on this day.
