Roman Emperor Diocletian ordered the destruction of all Christian churches and the general persecution of Christians.

1208
At the age of 26, Francis of Assisi received his calling to a life of poverty and service in the name of Christianity.

1500
Holy Roman Emperor Charles V was born. During his reign from 1519 to 1556, he officially pronounced Martin Luther an outlaw and heretic.

1510
Pope Julius II excommunicated the entire republic of Venice because of their refusal to submit to his authority.

1520
On his twentieth birthday, Charles V was crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire by Pope Leo X, becoming the last emperor crowned by a pope. During his reign from 1519 to 1556, he officially pronounced Martin Luther an outlaw and heretic.

1581
Pope Gregory XIII gave his official approval to the results of his calendar reform commission, thus leading to the creation of the Gregorian Calendar.

1949
Egyptian and Israeli representatives met at Rhodes to sign an armistice.

1955
Iraq, Turkey, Britain, Pakistan, and Iran signed a treaty pledging economic and military cooperation. This agreement was technically called the Central Treaty Organization (CENTO), but became more popularly known as the "Baghdad Pact" and produce quite a bit of strife in the Middle East because many nations viewed it as a thinly veiled attempt to split Arab nations apart. It was, in fact, part of the efforts of the United States to create a string of treaties around the world similar to NATO and for the purpose of containing communist expansion from the Soviet Union and China. This treaty was open to any nation except Israel and in March, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Syria joined an alliance as a counter-move.

1988
The United States Supreme Court ruled 8-0 that Jerry Falwell could not collect damages for a parody that appeared in the magazine Hustler.

2001
The Supreme Court let stand a ruling from the 7th Circuit Court which barred Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon from placing a Ten Commandments marker in front of the Indiana State Capitol.

2004
Writer and Holocaust survivor Hajo Meyer criticized Israel for its treatment of the Palestinians people, claiming that it was very similar to how the Nazis treated Jews during the Second World War.

On Israeli state-run radio, deputy minister Zeive Boim asked "is it genetic defect that explains the continuing criminality of the Palestinians?"

2004
President George W. Bush announced that he supported a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. He did not specifically endorse the wording proposed by Representative Marilyn Musgrave which has been questioned for the likelihood of also prohibiting states the ability to recognize same-sex civil unions and domestic partnerships. However, he did say that the wording of Musgrave's amendment "meets his principles" in protecting the "sanctity of marriage" between men and women.

2005
Anglican Church churches in North America are asked to withdraw their representatives on the Anglican Consultive Council until at least after the 2008 Lambeth Conference. This request was made in response to the continued insistence of these churches to do their own way with respect to the ordination of gays and gay marriage.
