Silvester I was elected pope.

1596
The Catholic League was disbanded, leading to the end of the French Wars of Religion between Roman Catholics and Huguenots.

1606
Guy Fawkes was convicted in the "Gunpowder Plot" and later executed.

1929
Leon Trotsky was expelled from Russia.

1931
The Psychograph, the first device designed for the purpose of "automated" phrenology, was revealed to the public during an auto show. The Psychograph consisted of a helmet and movable rods which took measurements over 32 points on the skull.

1944
Decided: Prince v. Massachusetts
In a 5-4 Court Decision, the Court upheld Massachusetts' restriction on the abilities of children to sell religious literature.

1947
The Yugoslav government accuses the Vatican of conspiring to hide war criminals and help them escape to South America.

1965
Iraq abolishes the military tribunals and martial law that had been in effect since 1958.

1174
Bernard of Clairvaux is canonized.
