Lisbon was hit by Earthquake and about 30,000 died. This led to a crisis of faith for many Christians who wondered why God would allow such a tragedy to occur.

1564
The Council of Trent issued its conclusions in the Tridentinum, establishing a distinction between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism.

1699
Peace Treaty of Carlowitz: Signed between the Hapsburgs of Austria and the Ottoman Turks, the Turks surrender Hungary, Transylvania, Croatia, and Slovenia to the Hapsburgs, Morea in Greece to the Venetian Republic, and Moldavia to Poland. For most historians this marks the real beginning of the end for the Ottoman Empire. With this treaty, European fears of the Turks come to a close.

1715
French philosopher Claude Adrien Helvetius was born in Paris.

1965
Iran's Premier, Hassan Ali Mansour, died from the bullet wounds he received five days earlier at the hands of Muhammad Bokharaii, a Muslim extremist. In May, four members of the Crusaders for Islam, a terrorist group, would be executed for their role in the assassination.
