After a ten-year suspension, the Council of Trent reconvened in order to deal with the Reformation and renewal of the Roman Catholic Church.

1689
Charles de Montesquieu was born in Chateau de la Brede (near Bourdeaux, France).

1844
Senator (later President) James Buchanan introduced a resolution in the United States Senate that the United States be declared a Christian Nation and acknowledge Jesus Christ as America's Savior. The resolution was rejected, but many similar resolutions would be introduced during the following years, including at least one that would have amended the Constitution.

2002
The Education Committee of the Washington State Senate considered a bill which stated that "the legislature finds that the teaching of the theory of evolution in the common schools of the state of Washington is repugnant to the principles of the Declaration of Independence and thereby unconstitutional and unlawful. All textbooks and curriculum that teach the theory of evolution shall be removed from the public schools forthwith and replaced with textbooks and curriculum that teach the self-evident truth of creation."
