Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of England's King Henry VIII, died.

1765
Pope Clement XIII published the bull "Apostolicum pascendi," praising the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) for their accomplishments. This was issued in reaction to their banishment from various European countries like Portugal and France.

1860
Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection went into its second edition, 3,000 copies.

1972
Lewis F. Powell Jr. was sworn in as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

William Hubbs Rehnquist was sworn in as an Associate Supreme Court Justice.

Decided: FFRF vs. Faith Works
U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb of the Western District Court of Wisconsin ruled that grants to Faith Works constituted "unrestricted, direct funding of an organization that engages in religious indoctrination" and, hence, was unconstitutional.

Denied: LeVake v. Independent School District
The Supreme Court denied an appeal to hear a case brought by a Minnesota teacher alleging that being denied the opportunity to teach "evidence against evolution" amounted to infringement on his rights to free speech and free exercise of religion.
