Brown v Board of Education: Caste, Culture, and the Constitution
Racial Segregation in America
Guide Rating -
Pros  •  Offers an excellent introduction to what sort of discrimination existed, why, and how it affected people
•  Explains the significance of the case - not just in terms of race, but also judicial activism
•  Provides important information on a very important court case on its 50th anniverary
Cons  •  Many readers might prefer more information about the case and less history of discrimination
The Bottom Line - People who have grown up and lived most of their lives in the 50 years since Brown was decided simply cannot imagine what it was like for blacks and whites during the age of segregation. The importance of Brown is directly tied to the preceding four hundred years or so during which white supremacy was largely taken as a given and enforced through both custom and law.

Guide Review

Racial Segregation in America
Lists of truly ground-breaking and culture-changing decisions by the United States Supreme Court are generally pretty short. For all the decisions handed down every decade, few are of first-rank significance. There is no doubt that, among them, the collection of cases known as Brown v. Board of Education must be included near the top, generally coming in after only Marbury v. Madison and Plessy v. Ferguson.
