The label "New Age" is a vague, catch-all term applied all manner of modern spiritual, paranormal and religious beliefs. Just about the only thing they all have in common is that they do not derive from biblical traditions, which of course leads those who belong to the orthodox or fundamentalist wings of those biblical traditions to treat anything New Age as satanic and evil.
New Age: Codependency
Unfortunately, what was once a worthy concept was quickly bastardized to apply to
pretty much everyone. At first, the error was made to assume that any sort of caring
for addicts was essentially pathological - caring became a disease because people were
supposedly "addicted" to their caring behaviors. Eventually, it included anyone who
was in any sort of relationship with a "holic" (foodaholic, workaholic, sexaholic),
with people who are mentally disturbed, and with people who are simply "irresponsible."
New Age: Dysfunctional Behavior
Is it just a coincidence that the standard characteristics of supposedly "dysfunctional"
and "co-dependent" behavior are also the stereotypical characteristics which were
encouraged in American women during the 1950's?
New Age: Dysfunctional Politics
Codependency may give people a renewed feeling of control and relief, but it fails
fundamentally in addressing their problems. It places inordinate emphasis on inner
feelings and Higher Powers in the attempt to deal with women's problems instead of the
two factors which social scientists have repeatedly stated have the biggest impact
upon women's self esteem: children and finances.
New Age: Therapeutic Culture
Premises, propositions and conclusions - the pieces of arguments - may usually
be easy to spot. But arguments themselves aren't always so easy, and very often people
will offer things which they claim are arguments but definitely are not.
