Education Contrary to the well-intentioned expectations of many, the education of our nation's citizens - from kindergarten through college - is hardly a neutral process. It involves not simply the transmission of practical and factual knowledge, but our schools are also, outside of family, our society's primary means of fostering community and national identity for each succeeding generation. For this reason, when the nature and meaning of our society comes under question, the conflict will eventually reach our schools.
The radical/religious right attacks a number of different sources for the problems they see in schools and, hence, in society in general. Secular Humanism is a popular villain, in particular because it offers a positive alternative to theistic religion. Supreme Court rulings which removed mandatory religious instruction and promotion in school are common targets, as are the political activism of educational organizations like the National Educational Association.
"Far from being neutral, the American government is now in the position of favoring unbelief over belief and irreligion over religion." -James Hitchcock
"...removing prayer and the acknowledgment of God from our classrooms has been the *primary cause* of the devastatingly serious decline in the lives of students, their families, the schools, and our nation." -Concerned Women for America
