One of Zeus' best known accomplishments, aside perhaps from overthrowing the Titans, was his battle against the Giants. These serpent-footed creatures with a thousand hands and incredible strength wanted to overthrow Zeus because their mother, Gaia, was upset at how Zeus himself had overthrown the Titans. The Giants could not be killed by gods, but they were vulnerable to mortals - and so the Olympian gods called upon Heracles who helped them defeat the Giants. This marble relief of Zeus battling three Giants comes from the eastern frieze of Pergamon and was created around 180 BCE.
