This undated drawing of the interior of the Temple of Neptune in Paestum was made facing the back of the temple, looking down the middle of the naos, or inner sanctuary where the statue of the god was located. The naos of the Temple of Neptune is divided by two rows of 7 two-tiered columns. All of the lower tier have survived, but only some of the upper tier remain.
Inside the Temple of Poseidon there are a number statues and vases pointing to Hera-worship here. Some have argued that this suggests the presence of goddess-worship even prior to the arrival of Greeks, but that is purely speculation. In line with its younger age, the style is far less archaic than the other two temples of Paestum.
