This photo from inside Mycenae looking out shows the remains of a number of small structures. Most people were not allowed to live behind the walls - that honor was reserved for royalty and perhaps a few others like soldiers and priests. Outside live farmers, merchants, and artisans, many of whom probably lived in the buildings you see here.
