Mycenae Lion Gate

If you look at the walls of Mycenae, one thing that stands out is their great size. In some places the walls are up to 7.5m thick and 12m high and their total length is around 900m. It is for this reason that the ancient Greeks referred to them as Cyclopean Walls, believing that only a creature as large and strong as a cyclops could have constructed them. It is worth remembering that these walls date back to around 1500 BCE, which means that for classical Greece this was their "ancient" history.
