Mycenae Lion Gate

The triangular Lion stone is as much functional as it is decorative because it serves to receive the stress of the large blocks above the lintel stone (the stone across the top of the gate). The lintel stone itself weighs around 12 tons and we should remember that this gate was constructed around 1250 BCE, which makes this a very impressive engineering feat.
