The construction of massive fortifications at Mycenae came at an important time in ancient Greek culture. This was an era when large organized civilization was really getting off the ground. Kings and other heroic figures led structured societies that traded extensively with other communities, leading to the spread of knowledge and art all around the Mediterranean region.
Palaces like the one in Mycenae were constructed around Greece between 1400 and 1200 BCE, generally known as the Late Helladic IIA-IIIB era. Powerful potentates ruled large regions from their citadels, competing with one another for control of resources such as fertile lands and trade routes.
On the above map the Burial Circle can be seen on the far left. The famous Lion Gate is just to the right and above that. The palace can be seen almost directly in the center.
