According to Greek mythology, Jason and his Argonauts stopped briefly in Corinth on their return trip with the Golden Fleece to give thanks to Poseidon (patron god of the city) for their safe voyage. In another tale from Greek mythology, Sisyphus was once king of Corinth and, after insulting the gods, he was punished by being forced to push a rock up hill without ever reaching the summit because it would only roll back down again.
