Corinth - Periene Fountain

Corinth appears in several places in ancient Greek mythology. Peirene cried so much over her dead son that her tears became a spring. That spring, in turn, became a favorite watering spot for Pegasus who was captured there by Bellerophon. The arched openings behind the pool in the above photo led to bowls carved in the rock where water from the spring of Perene collected. At one time people would descend down to the pool and go to the spring to consult with Apollo.
