The Parthenon is an amazing feat of architectural engineering. It has survived earthquakes, fires, wars, and more over its 2,500 year history. In the original construction, the gaps between the blocks are believed to have been less than 100th of a millimeter wide, too small for even water to seep through.
In fact, most of the wooden pins used in the columns are still in perfect conditions because they were protected from the weather and damp for more than two millennia. Today, though, it is under constant assault from the vicious air pollution that plagues Athens, causing the marble to soften into gypsum which just falls away in the rain.
