Construction of the Propylaea on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, was directed by the great Athenian leader Pericles who led the reconstruction of the Acropolis and other areas of Athens after the Persian Wars. Unfortunately the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta in 431 BCE prevented it from ever being completely finished.
