Athens Temple of Athena Nike Apteros: Back

The Temple of Nike Athena was probably designed by an architect name Callicrates around the time of Pericles, but the actual construction didn't occur until well after Pericles had died. Callicrates was the same person who designed the Parthenon.

Although small, the temple was given magnificent friezes which depicted not mythological events, as was usually the case, but historical events - specifically, the Battle of Plataea in which the Greeks defeated the Persians around 494 BCE. The temple has been dismantled by Turks in 1686 but it has been reassembled on the original site.
