Twin sister of Apollo and daughter of Zeus (with Leto), Artemis was one of the most important goddesses of the Greeks. For the Greeks, Artemis was goddess of the hunt, protector of wild game, and watcher over childbirth. All of this was a rather odd combination and, as far as hunting is concerned, rather odd responsibilities for a goddess.
