Aphrodite of Cnidus (Knidos)

Most cults dedicated to Aphrodite may have centered around women, but some also existed for men. In addition to her role as goddess of beauty and love, Aphrodite also had some authority over seafaring, civic harmony, and the protection of citizens. Thus there were cults dedicated to her which involved sailors and sacrifices made by city magistrates.

The above image is of the Aphrodite of Cnidus (Knidos) created by Praxiteles, the first monumental female nude know of in classical sculpture. This particular statue seems to have set the standard according to which other female nudes were made. The original was unfortunately destroyed in a fire in Constantinople and all that remains is a Roman marble copy.
