Aphrodite of Melos (Venus de Milo)

It's not absolutely clear to scholars where Aphrodite originally comes from. Many believe that she was derived from an eastern fertility goddess and the Greeks themselves though of her has originating in the East - she is often described "the Cyprian" and coming from Cyprus (her most important worship site was located on Cyprus).

It is true that fertility goddess were common in the ancient past and Aphrodite herself is goddess not merely of human sexuality but of fertility in general, including the fertility of the land and animals. Her originating as a fertility goddess seems plausible, then.
