The Temple of Hephaestus in Athens once contained large bronze statues of Hephaestus and Athena. Although they have been lost, ancient descriptions indicate that at the base there was a depiction of the birth of Erichthonios, being held by Gaia up to Athena. Erichthonios is sometimes described as the son of Hephaestus and Gaia, although Athena adopted him and took responsibility for raising him.
