The Greek word agora is a general term for an open-air marketplace in any city, often used similarly to that of a forum in Roman cities, and was always considered an essential aspect of any ancient Greek city. Agoras in Greek city-states were sacred to the local community - it is true that they were political, but in these cities the line between political and religious didn't exist as we know it today.
