Jerusalem: Garden of Gethsemane in 1943

 

In the above photograph with the olive tree and monk in the foreground, it's possible to see the walls of Jerusalem in the background. To the left you can also see the Golden Gate. It is thought that when Jesus entered Jerusalem, he entered by the Golden Gate. Before it was sealed by the Turks, this was the gate used by people coming along the roads from Bethany and Jericho. This is also the gate though which Jews have traditionally believed that the Messiah would enter Jerusalem; this is why it was sealed, to dampen Jewish messianic hopes.
