Ramleh was captured by the First Crusaders who made it an important seat of baronial power. It was also the location of several significant battles. In 1101 during the First Battle of Ramleh, king Baldwin I defeated an Egyptian army under emir Sa'ad ed-Daula al-Qawasi.
In 1105 during the Third Battle of Ramleh the Crusaders were able to prevent Egyptian forces from moving on Jerusalem and recapturing it, thus preventing any further large invasions of the Crusader states from Egypt. Again in 1177 there was a battle in Ramleh where Baldwin IV is able to come up behind Saladin and surprise him, scattering his army before it reaches Jerusalem.
