The castle of Marienburg, Europe's largest Gothic fortress, was constructed by the Teutonic knights in Prussia in 1309 and it served as their headquarters until 1466. The city itself had also been founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1274 on the Nogat river. This city was the capital of their Teutonic state and is known as Malbork in Poland today.
In reality Marienburg castle can be described as three castles: a high, middle, and low castle. Under continuous construction for over 200 years, the Teutonic Knights never completely integrated the three structures and the Low Castle encompasses nearly 52 acres, larger than any other castle in Europe.
