Charlemagne was the founder of the Frankish Empire and did much to spread Christianity across Europe. In addition to his military exploits he also fostered education and scholarship, becoming responsible for the Carolingian Renaissance. This involved a flowering of literature, arts, architecture, law, and religious studies during and shortly after Charlemagne's reign. Some scholars dispute that any identifiable renaissance occurred, or at least that if it did it wasn't nurtured by the court. This image depicts Charlemagne doing just that, reflecting the traditional accounts.
