In 1020 merchants from Amalfi and Salerno were granted permission by the Egyptian Caliph to build a hospice in Jerusalem. Out of this grew The Order of Knights of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (also known as: Knights of Malta, Knights of Rhodes, and most commonly as Knights Hospitaller). The Hospitallers were one of the most important Christian forces during the Crusades.
