When the European Crusaders invaded the Holy Land, they built massive fortifications to protect their territory and expanded the fortresses the captured. The Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem was always in a very precarious position, never encompassing very much land and never entirely subduing the local population. As a consequence, a series of strong castles was key to defending the territory.
