Godless Political Values: Importance of Godless Values to Modern Democracy

Friday March 28, 2008
Politics in a liberal, democratic democracy cannot long proceed or survive simply by inertia; instead they must be constantly fed by people who are engaged in the political process and who share some of the basic values necessary for such a democracy to thrive. None of these values depend in any way upon religion or theism; this means that they necessarily 'godless' - that they exist independently of people's religions and gods.

Honestly Austin, have you ever considered the many secular socieities that thrived under the assumption of atheism? They have a history of atrocity. You want me to give you a list?

No, because no society has been ruled by the assumption of atheism. Atheism isn’t a belief and thus can’t be an “assumption” that can rule anything.

LOL! Yet you want us to be ruled under values that are “godless” which is independent of “people’s religions and gods.” Sounds like an assumption of atheism to me. Plenty of communistic countries have been ruled under the assumption of atheism. To deny that is to deny reality.

Technically, atheism means the belief in no God NOT the lack of belief in God. I write about it here.

Godless and atheism aren’t the same thing. The founding fathers were theists, but they deliberately set up a a godless government. Theists play baseball, but the rules and structure of the game are godless.

Plenty of communistic countries have been ruled under the assumption of atheism. To deny that is to deny reality.

Communist countries are ruled on communism, an economic system which can occur alongside both atheism and theism.

Technically, you are mistaken. Dictionairies, atheists, and most technical reference works include the broad definition of atheism as the absence of belief in gods. That’s simply how words with the “a” prefix are normally defined.

Yeah, it really irks me when Christians use that definition. As if atheism is all about not believing in their god. By that definition, Hindus are atheists, as they have no belief in “God”.
