September 08, 1892: An early version of "The Pledge of Allegiance" appeared in "The Youth's Companion," a periodical for children: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands; one nation indivisible, with liberty and Justice for all." Author Francis Bellamy, a socialist editor and clergyman, was attempting to give words to the views of his cousin, Edward Bellamy, author of various socialist utopian novels.
