Creationists Abandoning Intelligent Design?

Thursday October 20, 2005
Intelligent Design is a new form of creationism that was developed in order to make it easier to win both legal and public relations battles. The creationist roots of Intelligent Design are undeniable, but like Peter denied Jesus it appears that some creationists are starting to deny Intelligent Design. It appears the ID is becoming too ecumenical for their taste.

IDtheFuture reports:

Critics of ID are quick to label it creationism. It is therefore ironic and creationists are increasingly reluctant to identify themselves as design theorists. Creationists, both of the young-earth and the old-earth variety, tend to think ID doesn’t goes far enough and seem reluctant to embrace ID’s widening circle of allies, a circle that now includes Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, New Agers, and non-dogmatic agnostics. Indeed, creationists are increasingly removing themselves from ID’s big tent.

Blogs4God finds the situation to be difficult. If creationists work with Intelligent Design theorists, they will also be working with non-Christians who accept ID. There aren’t many such people, but ID pushes their presence hard in order to avoid too close of an association with fundamentalist Christianity. That, too, of course creates problems for creationists — it’s not easy to work with an organization that doesn’t like to admit how important you are to it.

On the other hand, ignoring Intelligent Design and working for traditional creationism instead will mean “the loss of “bringing God back” to America, not to mention the western world.” Those are the words of the Blogs4God author — and notice that this is exactly the goal of Intelligent Design which ID advocates keep pretending doesn’t exist. The purpose of ID is religious, not scientific — the purpose is to promote religion in society generally and make society more “godly” (read: fundamentalist or conservative evangelical Christian) rather than secular and scientific.

Perhaps creationists should abandon Intelligent Design because it’s so dishonest. Creationists, at least, are honest about what they believe and what they want. Intelligent Design supporters are not — it’s rare that they openly acknowledge what they are really seeking. Usually, they pretend that their program is scientific and rational, but as even this short piece makes clear that is the farthest thing from their minds. Creationism might be seriously lacking in intellectual honesty, but it’s not normally as deceitful as Intelligent Design.
